Stevenage - Stevenage is a good sized town placed north of the city of London and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, close to the A1 (M), it boasts a population of approximately 85,000 and was chosen to be the first of the 'New Towns' in 1946 consisting of six self contained estates, the earliest of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Yet in spite of its ostensibly new appearance, Stevenage in reality has an ancient the historical past and sits close to where the St Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, it was labelled as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Besides its nearness to the Roman road, antiquities unearthed in districts around Stevenage supply evidence of its early story in long gone, unrecorded days. Indeed at the time of construction on the Chells Manor estate, a large hoard of more than 2,000 Roman silver coins was discovered, that came after the discovery of varied Roman and Saxon artefacts at the time of the building of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons needless to say followed the collapse of the Roman Empire and their community was founded close to the place where the 1st proper village evolved. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was written, and almost a century later in 1281 it became a town in the real sense of the word, when it was granted a charter permitting it to hold a market every week, as well as, a once a year "fair", a celebration that is still put on even now.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was built in the 12th century, and to some degree improved in the 15th C, at which time a clerestory was added as well as extremely beautiful carvings and wood work. The first Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this existed until the later part of the 20th C. A lot of the town's wealth came from those travelling on the Great North Road, with many inns being built in the town to provide for all the stage coaches which came by during the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as twenty one every day). 1857 celebrated the appearance of the train and the death of the stage coach was at hand, in actual fact creating a slow down of growth for the town.
