Stevenage - Stevenage is a medium sized town to be found north of the city of London and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, adjacent to the A1 (M), it houses a population of around 85,000 and was selected as the 1st of the 'New Towns' in the 1940's with 6 independent communities, the 1st of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Still in spite of its apparently new look, the area of Stevenage has an ancient history and was built close to where the Baldock to Verulanium (St Albans) road, built by the Romans ran, it was labelled "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - Aside from its proximity to the Roman road, artefacts found in locations around Stevenage offer verification of its earlier history in long gone, undocumented times. Indeed during building work on the Chells Manor area, a considerable hoard of over 2,000 Roman coins was discovered, which came after finds of various Roman and Saxon relics during the construction of the New Town itself. The Saxons obviously followed the fall of the Romans and their community was built around the spot where the 1st true village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was written, and later in 1281 it became a town in the true sense of the word, when it was given its charter which allowed it to hold a weekly market, and additionally, an annual "fair", a special event which is still organised in these modern times.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was first built during the 12th C, and was dramatically improved in the 15th C, at which time a clerestory was added as well as some extremely elaborate carvings and wood work. The 1st Grammar School was founded by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this persisted until the late 20th century. Almost all the the prosperity of the town came from those travelling on the North Road, with plenty of inns being built in the town to serve the multitude of stagecoaches which passed through through the 18th and 19th centuries (up to 21 every day). 1857 heralded the coming of the train and the demise of stage coaches was nigh, actually causing a slowing down of growth for the town.
