Stevenage - Stevenage is a large town based north of the city of London and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, close to the A1(M) motorway, it has a population of roughly 84,200 and was proclaimed to be the 1st of the 'New Towns' in the nineteen forties having half a dozen independent neighbourhoods, the first of which was finished in 1951 (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Then again irrespective of its comparatively new look, the town in truth has an early heritage and lies close to where the Baldock to Saint Albans (Verulanium) Roman road ran, Stevenage was called "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - Besides its close proximity to a Roman road, antiquities discovered in places around Stevenage supply evidence of its early history in long gone, unrecorded times. Indeed at the time of house building on the Chells Manor estate, an extensive hoard of over two thousand silver Roman coins was exposed, that came after finds of several Roman relics during the construction of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons needless to say came after the collapse of the Roman occupation and their settlement was founded around the spot where the 1st real village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was written, and some time later in twelve eighty one it became a town in the real sense of the word, when it was awarded a charter enabling it to hold a weekly market, and additionally, a yearly "fair", an event that's still put on even now.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was begun during the 12th C, and was dramatically upgraded in the 15th century, at which time a clerestory was added as well as some extremely elaborate carvings and wood work. The first Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th century, and this persisted till the later part of the 20th century. The majority of the town's wealth resulted from stage coach passengers on the North Road, for lots of inns being built in Stevenage to provide for the multitude of stagecoaches that passed through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as many as 21 every day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the railway and the demise of stage coaches was nigh, in reality creating a slow down of progression for the town.
