Stevenage - Stevenage is a sizeable town placed to the north of the capital in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, adjacent to the A1 (M), it houses a population of roughly 85,000 and was selected as the very first of the 'New Towns' in the mid-1940's made up of 6 self contained communities, the first of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Then again notwithstanding its apparently new appearance, Stevenage has an ancient heritage and evolved near to where the Baldock to St Albans (Verulanium) Roman road ran, Stevenage was labeled "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - As well as its closeness to a Roman road, remains and artefacts uncovered in locations around Stevenage supply verification of its earlier story in long past, unrecorded times. In fact during building work on the Chells Manor estate, a huge hoard in excess of two thousand Roman silver coins was unearthed, this followed discoveries of a considerable number of Saxon and Roman artefacts at the time of the construction of the New Town. The Saxons needless to say followed the demise of the Roman occupation and their camp was set up close to the area where the 1st true village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was compiled, and almost a century later in 1281 Stevenage became an actual town, when it was given its charter to hold a weekly market, as well as, a once a year "fair", a special event which is still put on even now.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was first built during the 12th century, then was to some degree improved during the fifteenth century, when a clerestory was added as well as highly ornamental wood work and carvings. The earliest Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in fifteen fifty eight, and this was around up until the later part of the twentieth century. The majority of the the riches of the town came from those travelling on the North Road, with lots of coaching inns being established in the town to provide for the large number of stagecoaches that passed through throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as much as twenty one per day). 1857 heralded the coming of the train and the demise of stagecoaches was nigh, actually leading to a slowing down of expansion for the town.
