Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town found north of London and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, just off the A1 (M), it houses a population of around 80,000 and was proclaimed to be the 1st of the 'New Towns' in the mid-nineteen forties consisting of half a dozen independent estates, the earliest of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Still in spite of its outwardly new look, the town of Stevenage has an early heritage and is built close to where the Baldock to Verulanium (St Albans) Roman road ran, it was identified as "Stigenace" in the 1086 Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA Potted History of the Town - Apart from its close proximity to a Roman road, remains and artefacts uncovered in locations around Stevenage supply proof of its earlier history in long gone, undocumented times. In fact at the time of building on the Chells Manor estate, a large hoard in excess of two thousand Roman silver coins was found, that came after finds of a significant number of Saxon and Roman artefacts during the construction of the New Town. The Saxons needless to say followed the collapse of the Romans and their community was founded around the place where the 1st real village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was compiled, and later on in 1281 Stevenage became a town in the real sense of the word, when it was accorded its charter allowing it to hold a market every week, and also, a once a year "fair", a celebration which is still held even now.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was built in the 12th C, and was extensively remodelled during the 15th C, when a clerestory was added as well as some extremely elaborate carvings and wood work. The 1st Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-sixteenth century, and this was around till the later part of the 20th C. Almost all the town's riches came from those travelling on the North Road, with plenty of inns being established in Stevenage to serve the large number of stagecoaches which passed by throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as much as 21 each day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the railway and the decline of stagecoaches was at hand, in reality leading to a slow down of expansion for the town.
