Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town situated to the north of the city of London in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, beside the major road the A1 (M), it is home to a population of roughly 84,000 and was designated to be the 1st of the 'New Towns' in nineteen forty six made up of 6 self contained estates, the 1st of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). On the other hand notwithstanding its comparatively new appearance, the area of Stevenage does have an ancient history and sits close to where the Saint Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock Roman road ran, it was named "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - Aside from its proximity to a Roman road, remains discovered in locations around Stevenage offer verification of its early story in long past, undocumented days. Indeed in the course of house building work on the Chells Manor estate, a substantial hoard of more than two thousand Roman coins was discovered, this followed the discovery of countless Saxon and Roman relics at the time of the construction of the New Town. The Saxons of course followed the decline of the Roman occupation and their community was founded close to the spot where the 1st true village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was produced, and almost a century later in twelve eighty one it became a town in the real sense of the word, when it was issued a charter enabling it to hold a market every week, and also, an annual "fair", an occasion which is still held to this day.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was first built in the 12th century, and then considerably enhanced during the fifteenth century, at which time a clerestory was added and some incredibly ornamental woodwork and carvings. The first Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-sixteenth century, and this existed up until the later part of the 20th century. Almost all the the affluence of the town came from travellers taking the North Road, with many coaching inns being built in the town to provide for the great many stage coaches which came by during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as much as 21 each day). 1857 heralded the appearance of the railway and the downfall of stagecoaches was at hand, actually creating a slowing down of progress for the town.
