Stevenage - Stevenage is a good sized town placed to the north of London and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, close to the A1 (M), it boasts a populace of approximately 84,200 and was designated as the very first of the 'New Towns' in the mid-nineteen forties consisting of half a dozen self contained neighbourhoods, the 1st of which was completed in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). But irrespective of its obviously new look, the area of Stevenage has an early history and grew close to where the Verulanium (St Albans) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, it was named "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Besides its proximity to a Roman road, remains and artefacts unearthed in the Stevenage area give proof of its earlier history in long past, undocumented years. Indeed at the time of construction on the Chells Manor area, a considerable hoard of more than 2,000 Roman silver coins was unearthed, this followed discoveries of many Roman relics at the time of the building of the New Town itself. The Saxons obviously came after the collapse of the Romans and their settlement was built around the spot where the first actual village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was produced, and almost a century later in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a town in the correct sense of the word, when it was given its charter to hold a weekly market, and also in addition to this, a once a year "fair", an occasion that's still put on in modern times.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was commenced in the 12th century, and substantially enhanced in the fifteenth century, when a clerestory was added and some extremely ornamental carvings and woodwork. The 1st Grammar School was set up by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this remained up to the late 20th century. Most of the the prosperity of the town came from travellers taking the North Road, for lots of inns becoming built in the town to serve the large number of stage coaches that passed throughout the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as twenty one each day). 1857 heralded the coming of the railway and the decline of stagecoaches was nigh, in fact resulting in a slow down of progress for the town.
