Stevenage - Stevenage is a good sized town established north of the city of London in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, beside the major route the A1 (M), it is home to a population of roughly 84,200 and was proclaimed as the first of the 'New Towns' in the mid-1940's consisting of 6 independent communities, the earliest of which was completed in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Yet despite its outwardly new look, Stevenage does have an early history and grew adjacent to where the Verulanium (St Albans) to Baldock Roman road ran, Stevenage was documented as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA Brief History of Stevenage - Apart from its closeness to a Roman road, antiquities uncovered in locations around Stevenage supply evidence of its early story in long gone, unrecorded days. In fact during house building on the Chells Manor area, an important hoard of more than 2,000 silver Roman coins was discovered, this came after the discovery of various Roman and Saxon artefacts at the time of the building of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons naturally came after the fall of the Roman occupation and their community was set up around the spot where the 1st actual village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was written, and some time later in 1281 it became a proper town, when it was given a charter allowing it to hold a market each week, as well as, a yearly "fair", a special event that is still put on even now.

The St Nicholas Church, Stevenage's parish church was started in the 12th century, and was extensively enhanced in the fifteenth century, when a clerestory was added together with highly elaborate carvings and woodwork. The first Grammar School was founded by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this remained in existence until the late 20th century. The vast majority of the riches of the town resulted from stage coach passengers on the North Road, for lots of inns being established in Stevenage to serve the many stagecoaches that came by during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (up to 21 every day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the train and the dying of stagecoaches was nigh, in fact causing a slow down of progress for the town.
