The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was written, and later in 1281 Stevenage became a town in the true sense of the word, when it was awarded its charter to hold a market each week, and additionally, an annual "fair", a special event that is still organised even now.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was begun in the 12th century, then was somewhat remodelled during the fifteenth century, at which time a clerestory was added together with highly elaborate carvings and woodwork. The 1st Grammar School was set up by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th century, and this existed up to the late 20th century. Almost all the the affluence of the town came from stage coach passengers on the Great North Road, with plenty of coaching inns becoming established in Stevenage to serve the multitude of stagecoaches which came by throughout the 18th and 19th centuries (as much as twenty one per day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the train and the death of stagecoaches was at hand, in fact creating a slow down of progress for the town.
