Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town positioned to the north of the capital in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, beside the major route the A1 (M), it houses a population of about 84,200 and was selected to be the 1st of the 'New Towns' in the mid-nineteen forties consisting of half a dozen self contained estates, the 1st of which was completed in 1951 (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Yet irrespective of its seemingly new appearance, Stevenage in reality has an ancient heritage and evolved near to where the St Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, Stevenage was termed "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Aside from its close proximity to a Roman road, remains and artefacts unearthed in places around Stevenage give proof of its early story in long gone, unrecorded years. Indeed during construction on the Chells Manor area, a gigantic hoard in excess of two thousand Roman silver coins was dug up, that came after discoveries of various Roman antiquities during the construction of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons obviously came after the collapse of the Roman Empire and their camp was founded around the area where the 1st genuine village evolved. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was compiled, and then in 1281 Stevenage became a proper town, when it was awarded a charter which allowed it to hold a weekly market, as well as, an annual "fair", an occasion which is still put on to this day.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was built in the twelfth century, and was somewhat remodelled during the 15th C, when a clerestory was added together with very ornamental carvings and wood work. The earliest Grammar School was set up by Thomas Alleyne in 1558, and this was around up until the late 20th century. Almost all the the riches of the town came from those travelling on the North Road, with many inns being established in Stevenage to serve the multitude of stage coaches that passed through the 18th and 19th centuries (up to twenty one per day). 1857 celebrated the coming of the railway and the decline of stagecoaches was at hand, in fact leading to a slow down of progression for the town.
