The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was compiled, and almost a century later in twelve eighty one it became a town in the true sense of the word, when it was granted a charter permitting it to hold a weekly market, as well as, a once a year "fair", an event that's still put on today.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was started during the 12th century, and then significantly enhanced during the 15th C, when a clerestory was added and some very ornamental carvings and woodwork. The very first Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this remained until the later part of the 20th C. The majority of the town's riches came from travellers taking the North Road, for lots of inns being established in the town to serve all the stage coaches that passed through during the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as 21 each day). 1857 celebrated the appearance of the railway and the decline of stagecoaches was at hand, actually resulting in a slowing down of progression for the town.
