Stevenage - Stevenage is a substantial town placed north of the city of London within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, just off the A1 (M), it has a population of around 84,200 and was chosen to be the very first of the 'New Towns' in 1946 consisting of half a dozen independent estates, the earliest of which was finished in 1951 (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Even so notwithstanding its outwardly new look, Stevenage does have an early heritage and stands adjacent to where the Baldock to Saint Albans (Verulanium) road, built by the Romans ran, it was known as "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - Aside from its proximity to a Roman road, remains found in areas around Stevenage supply verification of its earlier history in long past, undocumented times. Indeed during building work on the Chells Manor estate, a very large hoard of over two thousand silver Roman coins was discovered, which came after finds of many Saxon and Roman antiquities during the construction of the New Town. The Saxons obviously followed the fall of the Romans and their community was founded near the area where the first true village evolved. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was compiled, and a century or so later in 1281 it became a town proper, when it was granted its charter to hold a market each week, and also in addition to this, a once a year "fair", a special event that is still held even today.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was first built in the 12th century, and was somewhat enhanced during the 15th century, when a clerestory was added along with extremely ornamental wood work and carvings. The earliest Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-sixteenth century, and this existed up to the later part of the twentieth century. Almost all the the riches of the town resulted from travellers taking the North Road, for lots of inns becoming built in the town to provide for all the stagecoaches that passed during the 18th and 19th centuries (up to twenty one per day). 1857 heralded the coming of the railway and the death of stagecoaches was at hand, in actual fact causing a slowing down of progression for the town.
