Stevenage - Stevenage is a good sized town placed to the north of London in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, close to the major route the A1 (M), it is home to a population of around 80,000 and was selected to be the very first of the 'New Towns' in nineteen forty six with half a dozen self contained estates, the first of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Still irrespective of its comparatively new look, the area of Stevenage has an early heritage and was built near to where the Saint Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, it was labelled "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - In addition to its closeness to a Roman road, remains and artefacts unearthed in the Stevenage region present verification of its early history in long past, undocumented times. In fact at the time of house building work on the Chells Manor estate, a massive hoard of over 2,000 Roman silver coins was unearthed, that came after finds of assorted Roman relics at the time of the building of the New Town itself. The Saxons needless to say followed the collapse of the Roman Empire and their community was founded around the area where the 1st real village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was produced, and almost a century later in 1281 Stevenage became a town in the real sense of the word, when it was awarded a charter enabling it to hold a market every week, as well as, an annual "fair", a special event which is still organised to this day.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was first built in the twelfth century, and was greatly enhanced in the 15th C, at which time a clerestory was added and some highly ornamental carvings and woodwork. The 1st Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this remained until the late 20th century. A lot of the the affluence of the town resulted from those travelling on the North Road, with lots of inns becoming built in the town to serve the large number of stagecoaches which passed through during the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as twenty one per day). 1857 celebrated the arrival of the railway and the death of stagecoaches was at hand, actually resulting in a slow down of progression for the town.
