Stevenage - Stevenage is a good sized town placed north of the city of London and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, near the A1(M) motorway, it houses a population of around 84,200 and was designated as the 1st of the 'New Towns' in nineteen forty six with half a dozen self contained communities, the earliest of which was finished in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Then again despite its fairly new appearance, the town of Stevenage has an early heritage and grew adjacent to where the Verulanium (Saint Albans) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, it was labelled "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA Potted History of the Town - In addition to its nearness to a Roman road, antiquities unearthed in the Stevenage vicinity give proof of its earlier story in long gone, undocumented days. Indeed during building work on the Chells Manor area, a massive hoard in excess of two thousand Roman coins was uncovered, which came after the discovery of a significant number of Roman antiquities at the time of the construction of the New Town. The Saxons naturally followed the demise of the Romans and their community was founded near the place where the 1st proper village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was compiled, and almost a century later in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a proper town, when it was issued its charter permitting it to hold a market each week, and also, a yearly "fair", a special event which is still held even now.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was built in the 12th century, and then to some degree enhanced during the 15th century, at which time a clerestory was added and some highly beautiful carvings and wood work. The 1st Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in fifteen fifty eight, and this endured up to the later part of the 20th C. A lot of the the prosperity of the town resulted from stage coach passengers on the Great North Road, with numerous inns being established in Stevenage to provide for the multitude of stagecoaches that passed by through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as many as twenty one each day). 1857 heralded the appearance of the railway and the downfall of stage coaches was at hand, actually causing a slow down of progression for the town.
