Stevenage - Stevenage is a good sized town to be found north of the capital in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, close to the major road the A1 (M), it houses a population of around 84,000 and was chosen to be the 1st of the 'New Towns' in the nineteen forties with half a dozen independent neighbourhoods, the 1st of which was finished in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Yet notwithstanding its ostensibly new look, the town of Stevenage in reality has an ancient the historical past and sits near to where the Baldock to Saint Albans (Verulanium) road, built by the Romans ran, Stevenage was documented as "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Aside from its nearness to the Roman road, antiquities found in locations around Stevenage present evidence of its early history in long past, unrecorded years. Indeed at the time of building work on the Chells Manor estate, an extensive hoard in excess of two thousand silver Roman coins was unearthed, this followed discoveries of numerous Saxon and Roman artefacts during the construction of the New Town. The Saxons of course followed the fall of the Romans and their camp was set up near the area where the first real village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was produced, and almost a century later in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a town proper, when it was accorded its charter permitting it to hold a weekly market, and in addition to this, a yearly "fair", an occasion that is still held in these modern times.

The St Nicholas Church, Stevenage's parish church was started during the 12th century, and then somewhat remodelled in the 15th C, at which time a clerestory was added along with remarkably ornamental carvings and woodwork. The first Grammar School was founded by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-sixteenth century, and this endured up to the later part of the 20th century. Much of the town's riches resulted from travellers taking the Great North Road, with plenty of coaching inns becoming built in the town to serve the great many stage coaches which passed by throughout the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as 21 each day). 1857 celebrated the arrival of the train and the decline of stage coaches was at hand, actually causing a slowing down of progress for the town.
