Stevenage - Stevenage is a good sized town situated north of London and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, close to the A1(M) motorway, it is home to a population of approximately 80,000 and was designated as the 1st of the 'New Towns' in the mid-1940's having six self contained communities, the 1st of which was completed in 1951 (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). But notwithstanding its seemingly new appearance, the area of Stevenage does have an ancient heritage and lies close to where the St Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock Roman road ran, Stevenage was labeled "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - Apart from its closeness to the Roman road, artefacts discovered in places around Stevenage provide proof of its early historical past in long past, undocumented days. In fact at the time of house building on the Chells Manor estate, a large hoard of over two thousand silver Roman coins was uncovered, this followed discoveries of assorted Saxon and Roman antiquities during the construction of the New Town itself. The Saxons needless to say came after the collapse of the Romans and their settlement was built near the spot where the first bona fide village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was written, and some time later in 1281 Stevenage became a town in the true sense of the word, when it was issued its charter to hold a market each week, and also, a yearly "fair", an event which is still held in modern times.

The St Nicholas Church, Stevenage's parish church was begun in the twelfth century, and then somewhat remodelled in the 15th century, when a clerestory was added together with highly decorative carvings and woodwork. The original Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in 1558, and this remained until the later part of the 20th C. A lot of the the riches of the town came from those travelling on the North Road, with numerous coaching inns becoming built in Stevenage to provide for the large number of stage coaches which passed through during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as much as twenty one every day). 1857 heralded the appearance of the railway and the death of the stage coach was at hand, actually resulting in a slowing down of progress for the town.
