Stevenage - Stevenage is a substantial town positioned north of London and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, close to the A1(M) motorway, it is home to a population of approximately 85,000 and was chosen as the 1st of the 'New Towns' in the mid-nineteen forties having six self contained communities, the first of which was completed in 1951 (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Having said that regardless of its ostensibly new appearance, the area of Stevenage has an ancient heritage and grew adjacent to where the Baldock to Verulanium (St Albans) road, built by the Romans ran, it was labelled "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - As well as its nearness to a Roman road, remains and artefacts found in the Stevenage locale provide verification of its earlier history in long gone, unrecorded years. Indeed during building on the Chells Manor estate, an extensive hoard of over two thousand Roman coins was uncovered, that came after discoveries of varied Roman artefacts at the time of the building of the New Town itself. The Saxons obviously came after the fall of the Roman occupation and their community was founded around the spot where the first true village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was produced, and later on in twelve eighty one it became an actual town, when it was given a charter allowing it to hold a weekly market, and additionally, a once a year "fair", an event which is still organised to this day.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was begun in the 12th century, and significantly enhanced in the 15th C, when a clerestory was added together with very beautiful wood work and carvings. The first Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-sixteenth century, and this existed till the late 20th C. Almost all the town's wealth resulted from travellers taking the North Road, with plenty of coaching inns becoming established in Stevenage to provide for the great many stage coaches that passed through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (up to twenty one every day). 1857 heralded the appearance of the train and the end of stage coaches was at hand, in fact resulting in a slowing down of growth for the town.
