Stevenage - Stevenage is a large town placed to the north of London and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, beside the major highway the A1 (M), it boasts a population of roughly 80,000 and was selected as the first of the 'New Towns' in 1946 with half a dozen self contained neighbourhoods, the 1st of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Yet notwithstanding its comparatively new look, Stevenage does have an early heritage and evolved adjacent to where the Baldock to Verulanium (Saint Albans) Roman road ran, it was noted as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Aside from its proximity to a Roman road, antiquities uncovered in the Stevenage local area supply proof of its earlier story in long gone, unrecorded times. Indeed in the course of house building on the Chells Manor area, a substantial hoard in excess of two thousand silver Roman coins was dug up, this followed the discovery of numerous Roman relics at the time of the construction of the New Town. The Saxons needless to say followed the fall of the Roman occupation and their camp was set up around the spot where the first true village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was compiled, and almost a century later in 1281 Stevenage became a town proper, when it was given a charter which allowed it to hold a weekly market, as well as, a yearly "fair", a celebration that is still put on in modern times.

The St Nicholas Church, Stevenage's parish church was commenced in the 12th century, and was to some extent improved in the fifteenth century, at which time a clerestory was added together with some remarkably beautiful woodwork and carvings. The earliest Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this existed until the late 20th C. Almost all the town's riches resulted from travellers taking the Great North Road, with numerous coaching inns becoming established in Stevenage to serve the multitude of stagecoaches which came by through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as many as 21 per day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the railway and the dying of stage coaches was nigh, in fact leading to a slow down of progression for the town.
