Stevenage - Stevenage is a substantial town positioned north of the capital and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, close to the major highway the A1 (M), it houses a population of around 84,000 and was proclaimed to be the 1st of the 'New Towns' in 1946 with half a dozen independent estates, the first of which was completed in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Even so in spite of its seemingly new look, the town of Stevenage does have an ancient heritage and sits close to where the Baldock to Saint Albans (Verulanium) Roman road ran, it was named "Stigenace" in the 1086 Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - As well as its close proximity to the Roman road, remains and artefacts found in areas around Stevenage give proof of its early history in long past, unrecorded years. Indeed during building work on the Chells Manor estate, an enormous hoard in excess of two thousand silver Roman coins was unearthed, that came after finds of varied Roman and Saxon artifacts during the construction of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons needless to say came after the end of the Romans and their community was built around the area where the 1st bona fide village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was compiled, and later on in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a proper town, when it was awarded its charter allowing it to hold a market each week, and also, an annual "fair", a celebration which is still put on even today.

The St Nicholas Church, Stevenage's parish church was started in the 12th C, and considerably remodelled in the fifteenth century, at which time a clerestory was added together with very beautiful carvings and woodwork. The 1st Grammar School was set up by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th century, and this was around up until the later part of the twentieth century. Much of the the prosperity of the town resulted from stage coach passengers on the Great North Road, with plenty of coaching inns being established in the town to serve all the stage coaches that passed through the 18th and 19th centuries (as much as twenty one each day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the railway and the death of the stage coach was at hand, actually resulting in a slowing down of expansion for the town.
