Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town positioned to the north of the capital in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, beside the A1 (M), it houses a population of roughly 80,000 and was chosen to be the 1st of the 'New Towns' in 1946 with half a dozen self contained communities, the 1st of which was completed in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). However despite its seemingly new look, the area of Stevenage in reality has an early history and lies adjacent to where the Baldock to Saint Albans (Verulanium) road, built by the Romans ran, it was labelled "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Besides its proximity to the Roman road, artefacts uncovered in districts around Stevenage deliver proof of its early historical past in long past, unrecorded years. Indeed during building work on the Chells Manor estate, an extensive hoard in excess of two thousand Roman silver coins was exposed, that came after the discovery of several Saxon and Roman relics at the time of the construction of the New Town itself. The Saxons of course followed the fall of the Romans and their settlement was built near the place where the 1st proper village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was compiled, and then in 1281 it became a proper town, when it was awarded a charter allowing it to hold a weekly market, and in addition to this, a yearly "fair", an occasion that is still organised even now.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was begun in the twelfth century, and dramatically improved during the 15th century, at which time a clerestory was added along with some incredibly beautiful wood work and carvings. The earliest Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in 1558, and this existed until the late 20th century. Almost all the town's riches resulted from those travelling on the Great North Road, for lots of inns being established in the town to serve the great many stage coaches which passed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (up to 21 per day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the railway and the demise of stage coaches was at hand, in reality leading to a slowing down of progress for the town.
