Stevenage - Stevenage is a large town established north of the city of London within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, close to the major highway the A1 (M), it is home to a population of around 84,200 and was chosen to be the very first of the 'New Towns' in 1946 consisting of 6 independent neighbourhoods, the earliest of which was finished in 1951 (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Even so despite its fairly new appearance, Stevenage in reality has an ancient heritage and is built close to where the St Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, it was described as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - Besides its close proximity to the Roman road, artefacts found in areas around Stevenage provide verification of its early history in long past, undocumented days. Indeed at the time of construction on the Chells Manor estate, a massive hoard in excess of two thousand Roman coins was dug up, which came after finds of a significant number of Saxon and Roman artefacts at the time of the construction of the New Town. The Saxons of course followed the fall of the Romans and their community was set up close to the area where the first proper village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was compiled, and a century or so later in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a town proper, when it was awarded a charter permitting it to hold a weekly market, as well as, a yearly "fair", an occasion that's still put on to this day.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was commenced in the 12th century, then was considerably enhanced in the fifteenth century, when a clerestory was added as well as some incredibly ornamental woodwork and carvings. The earliest Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th century, and this was around till the late twentieth century. Almost all the the prosperity of the town resulted from travellers taking the North Road, with lots of coaching inns being established in the town to provide for the multitude of stage coaches which passed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as much as twenty one per day). 1857 heralded the appearance of the train and the decline of stage coaches was nigh, in fact resulting in a slow down of progress for the town.
