Stevenage - Stevenage is a large town found north of the city of London in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, just off the A1(M) motorway, it boasts a population of approximately 85,000 and was chosen to be the first of the 'New Towns' in the nineteen forties made up of 6 independent neighbourhoods, the first of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Having said that notwithstanding its fairly new look, the area of Stevenage has an ancient heritage and was built near to where the Baldock to Verulanium (Saint Albans) Roman road ran, it was named "Stigenace" in the 1086 Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA Potted History of the Town - As well as its proximity to a Roman road, artefacts unearthed in districts around Stevenage deliver proof of its earlier history in long gone, unrecorded days. Indeed during construction on the Chells Manor estate, an enormous hoard in excess of 2,000 Roman coins was exposed, that followed discoveries of several Roman and Saxon artefacts during the building of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons of course came after the downfall of the Roman Empire and their community was set up near the spot where the first bona fide village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was produced, and later in 1281 Stevenage became an genuine town, when it was accorded its charter to hold a market each week, as well as, an annual "fair", an event which is still put on today.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was commenced during the 12th C, then was dramatically improved in the 15th C, when a clerestory was added together with some highly elaborate carvings and woodwork. The 1st Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in 1558, and this endured up to the later part of the 20th C. A lot of the the wealth of the town resulted from those travelling on the North Road, with lots of coaching inns being established in the town to serve all the stagecoaches which passed through during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as many as twenty one each day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the railway and the end of stage coaches was nigh, in fact causing a slowing down of growth for the town.
