Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town established north of the capital in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, just off the A1(M) motorway, it houses a population of about 84,200 and was designated to be the very first of the 'New Towns' in the 1940's made up of 6 self contained estates, the earliest of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Having said that in spite of its comparatively new look, the area of Stevenage does have an ancient history and grew close to where the Baldock to Verulanium (St Albans) Roman road ran, it was described as "Stigenace" in the 1086 Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA Potted History of Stevenage - As well as its closeness to a Roman road, antiquities found in locations around Stevenage deliver verification of its early history in long gone, unrecorded years. Indeed during house building work on the Chells Manor estate, an important hoard of more than 2,000 silver Roman coins was exposed, this followed the discovery of assorted Roman and Saxon artefacts at the time of the construction of the New Town itself. The Saxons obviously followed the end of the Roman occupation and their settlement was built near the spot where the first proper village evolved. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was written, and then in twelve eighty one it became a town proper, when it was awarded its charter to hold a weekly market, as well as, a once a year "fair", a celebration that is still put on even today.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was built in the 12th C, and then dramatically enhanced during the 15th century, at which time a clerestory was added as well as incredibly decorative carvings and woodwork. The earliest Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this remained in existence until the later part of the twentieth century. A lot of the town's riches came from stage coach passengers on the Great North Road, for lots of inns being built in the town to serve the large number of stagecoaches that passed through the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as twenty one every day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the railway and the demise of the stage coach was at hand, in actual fact resulting in a slow down of expansion for the town.
