Stevenage - Stevenage is a substantial town based to the north of the capital in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, just off the A1(M) motorway, it is home to a population of about 84,000 and was designated as the first of the 'New Towns' in the nineteen forties with half a dozen independent estates, the earliest of which was completed in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Having said that regardless of its ostensibly new appearance, Stevenage has an ancient history and grew near to where the Baldock to Verulanium (St Albans) road, built by the Romans ran, it was labelled as "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - Besides its close proximity to a Roman road, artefacts discovered in places around Stevenage provide evidence of its earlier historical past in long past, undocumented days. Indeed at the time of construction on the Chells Manor area, a gigantic hoard of more than two thousand silver Roman coins was found, that came after the discovery of numerous Roman and Saxon artifacts during the construction of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons of course followed the end of the Romans and their camp was founded around the spot where the first bona fide village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was compiled, and then in 1281 Stevenage became a proper town, when it was awarded its charter allowing it to hold a weekly market, and also, a yearly "fair", an occasion which is still put on in these modern times.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was begun during the twelfth century, and then somewhat upgraded in the 15th C, at which time a clerestory was added as well as some extremely beautiful wood work and carvings. The very first Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in fifteen fifty eight, and this existed up until the late twentieth century. Much of the town's riches resulted from stage coach passengers on the North Road, with plenty of inns being established in the town to provide for the multitude of stagecoaches which came by during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (up to 21 per day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the train and the decline of the stage coach was at hand, in reality resulting in a slow down of progression for the town.
