Still notwithstanding its fairly new look, the town of Stevenage has an early history and sits close to where the Verulanium (Saint Albans) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, Stevenage was named as "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA Potted History of Stevenage - As well as its close proximity to the Roman road, artefacts and relics discovered in places around Stevenage deliver evidence of its early history in long gone, unrecorded days. In fact during construction work on the Chells Manor estate, an extensive hoard of over two thousand silver Roman coins was dug up, that came after the discovery of numerous Saxon and Roman artifacts at the time of the construction of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons naturally followed the collapse of the Romans and their camp was set up near the spot where the first real village evolved. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was produced, and some time later in twelve eighty one it became an true town, when it was granted its charter which allowed it to hold a market each week, and also in addition to this, a once a year "fair", an event which is still put on even now.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was first built in the twelfth century, and then somewhat upgraded during the 15th century, when a clerestory was added and some very beautiful woodwork and carvings. The first Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in fifteen fifty eight, and this existed till the later part of the 20th century. The majority of the the prosperity of the town came from stage coach passengers on the Great North Road, with lots of inns becoming built in Stevenage to provide for the great many stage coaches which passed through through the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as 21 each day). 1857 celebrated the coming of the train and the end of stage coaches was at hand, actually causing a slowing down of progression for the town.
