Stevenage - Stevenage is a good sized town found north of the capital within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, close to the major highway the A1 (M), it houses a population of about 85,000 and was chosen to be the 1st of the 'New Towns' in 1946 having half a dozen self contained communities, the earliest of which was finished in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Still notwithstanding its fairly new appearance, the town of Stevenage in reality has an ancient heritage and is built near to where the Baldock to Saint Albans (Verulanium) Roman road ran, it was named as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Besides its proximity to the Roman road, antiquities discovered in the Stevenage locale supply evidence of its earlier historical past in long past, unrecorded days. Indeed during building on the Chells Manor estate, an immense hoard of over 2,000 silver Roman coins was unearthed, that followed finds of various Roman and Saxon antiquities at the time of the building of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons obviously followed the downfall of the Roman Empire and their community was founded near the place where the first genuine village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was compiled, and then in 1281 Stevenage became a proper town, when it was granted its charter to hold a weekly market, and also in addition to this, an annual "fair", a celebration that's still put on even today.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was commenced during the 12th century, and then somewhat improved during the 15th century, at which time a clerestory was added along with remarkably elaborate wood work and carvings. The original Grammar School was founded by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this was around up to the late 20th century. Almost all the town's prosperity resulted from those travelling on the North Road, for lots of inns becoming built in Stevenage to provide for the many stage coaches that travelled by during the 18th and 19th centuries (up to twenty one per day). 1857 celebrated the arrival of the railway and the death of the stage coach was nigh, in reality causing a slow down of progression for the town.
