Stevenage - Stevenage is a large town situated north of London and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, near the major route the A1 (M), it boasts a populace of roughly 80,000 and was selected to be the first of the 'New Towns' in nineteen forty six consisting of six independent neighbourhoods, the earliest of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Yet irrespective of its fairly new look, the town has an early history and is built adjacent to where the Baldock to Verulanium (Saint Albans) road, built by the Romans ran, Stevenage was listed as "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA Brief History of the Town - Besides its close proximity to a Roman road, artefacts discovered in the Stevenage vicinity provide verification of its earlier story in long gone, undocumented times. In fact in the course of building work on the Chells Manor estate, a significant hoard of over 2,000 Roman coins was exposed, this came after discoveries of several Roman antiquities at the time of the construction of the New Town. The Saxons obviously came after the downfall of the Roman Empire and their camp was built around the spot where the first real village evolved. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was compiled, and then in twelve eighty one it became an genuine town, when it was awarded its charter to hold a market each week, and also, an annual "fair", a celebration which is still organised even today.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was built in the 12th C, and then considerably improved during the 15th century, at which time a clerestory was added and some extremely decorative carvings and woodwork. The 1st Grammar School was founded by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this persisted up until the late twentieth century. Almost all the town's riches resulted from those travelling on the Great North Road, with plenty of inns being established in the town to serve the great many stage coaches that passed throughout the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as twenty one each day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the train and the demise of stage coaches was nigh, in actual fact resulting in a slow down of expansion for the town.
