Stevenage - Stevenage is a medium sized town established to the north of London in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, near the major route the A1 (M), it boasts a population of around 84,000 and was chosen to be the very first of the 'New Towns' in the nineteen forties comprising 6 self contained estates, the 1st of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). But despite its obviously new look, the town in reality has an ancient the historical past and evolved adjacent to where the Saint Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock Roman road ran, Stevenage was called "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - As well as its closeness to a Roman road, artifacts unearthed in districts around Stevenage give verification of its early story in long gone, unrecorded years. In fact in the course of house building work on the Chells Manor estate, a substantial hoard of more than 2,000 Roman silver coins was uncovered, that came after finds of a lot of Roman antiquities at the time of the construction of the New Town. The Saxons needless to say followed the end of the Roman Empire and their settlement was built near the place where the first bona fide village evolved. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was written, and some time later in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a town proper, when it was issued its charter to hold a weekly market, and also, a yearly "fair", a celebration that is still put on today.

The St Nicholas Church, Stevenage's parish church was first built in the 12th century, and was greatly improved during the 15th century, at which time a clerestory was added along with extremely ornamental wood work and carvings. The first Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th century, and this remained in existence up until the later part of the 20th C. Much of the town's affluence came from stage coach passengers on the Great North Road, for lots of coaching inns becoming built in the town to provide for the multitude of stage coaches that passed through the 18th and 19th centuries (as much as twenty one every day). 1857 celebrated the coming of the railway and the dying of stage coaches was at hand, in reality leading to a slowing down of progression for the town.
