Yet notwithstanding its comparatively new look, the area of Stevenage does have an early history and was built close to where the Baldock to St Albans (Verulanium) road, built by the Romans ran, it was labelled as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageA Brief History of the Town - Apart from its closeness to the Roman road, antiquities discovered in the Stevenage region give proof of its earlier history in long past, undocumented times. Indeed in the course of house building work on the Chells Manor estate, an enormous hoard of over two thousand silver Roman coins was uncovered, which followed the discovery of assorted Saxon and Roman artifacts at the time of the construction of the New Town itself. The Saxons naturally came after the decline of the Roman occupation and their camp was set up near the area where the 1st proper village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was written, and then in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a proper town, when it was granted a charter permitting it to hold a weekly market, and also, a once a year "fair", an occasion that's still organised even today.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was started during the 12th century, then was significantly enhanced during the 15th C, at which time a clerestory was added together with some highly decorative carvings and woodwork. The very first Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this was around till the later part of the 20th century. The majority of the town's wealth came from stage coach passengers on the Great North Road, with numerous coaching inns becoming built in the town to serve the great many stagecoaches that came by during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as much as twenty one per day). 1857 celebrated the appearance of the train and the death of stage coaches was at hand, in reality creating a slowing down of expansion for the town.
