Stevenage - Stevenage is a fairly sizeable town situated north of the city of London and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, adjacent to the A1 (M), it has a populace of roughly 84,000 and was proclaimed as the very first of the 'New Towns' in the mid-1940's composed of half a dozen self contained neighbourhoods, the earliest of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Then again in spite of its ostensibly new look, the town of Stevenage in fact has an early history and is built close to where the Baldock to Saint Albans (Verulanium) Roman road ran, Stevenage was known as "Stigenace" in the 1086 Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Aside from its close proximity to the Roman road, relics discovered in the Stevenage area offer evidence of its early history in long gone, undocumented years. In fact at the time of building work on the Chells Manor area, an immense hoard of more than 2,000 silver Roman coins was dug up, which followed finds of various Roman antiquities at the time of the building of the New Town itself. The Saxons of course came after the end of the Romans and their camp was built around the spot where the 1st actual village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was compiled, and some time later in 1281 it became a proper town, when it was given its charter to hold a weekly market, and in addition to this, an annual "fair", a celebration that is still put on today.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was built during the 12th C, then was to some degree remodelled during the 15th C, at which time a clerestory was added as well as incredibly ornamental carvings and wood work. The first Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-sixteenth century, and this existed till the later part of the 20th C. Much of the town's prosperity resulted from those travelling on the North Road, with numerous inns becoming established in the town to provide for the many stagecoaches which came by throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as many as twenty one per day). 1857 celebrated the arrival of the train and the decline of stage coaches was at hand, in actual fact resulting in a slowing down of growth for the town.
