Stevenage - Stevenage is a medium sized town situated to the north of London within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, just off the A1 (M), it is home to a population of approximately 84,000 and was proclaimed as the first of the 'New Towns' in the nineteen forties having six self contained neighbourhoods, the first of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Even so in spite of its fairly new look, the town of Stevenage does have an ancient the historical past and grew adjacent to where the Baldock to Verulanium (Saint Albans) Roman road ran, it was termed "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA Potted History of Stevenage - Apart from its nearness to a Roman road, artefacts and relics unearthed in districts around Stevenage supply proof of its earlier history in long past, undocumented times. In fact in the course of house building work on the Chells Manor estate, a huge hoard in excess of 2,000 silver Roman coins was unearthed, that followed discoveries of numerous Roman artifacts at the time of the construction of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons needless to say came after the end of the Roman occupation and their settlement was built close to the place where the 1st genuine village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was compiled, and later on in 1281 it became a town proper, when it was accorded a charter allowing it to hold a market each week, and also, an annual "fair", an occasion that's still put on to this day.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was begun in the twelfth century, and to some degree remodelled during the 15th century, when a clerestory was added together with remarkably ornamental woodwork and carvings. The original Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in 1558, and this remained in existence till the late twentieth century. The vast majority of town's affluence resulted from travellers taking the Great North Road, with numerous inns becoming established in the town to serve the multitude of stagecoaches which passed by throughout the 18th and 19th centuries (as much as 21 each day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the railway and the decline of the stage coach was nigh, in fact creating a slowing down of progress for the town.
