War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - Apart from its proximity to the Roman road, antiquities unearthed in the Stevenage local area supply verification of its earlier story in long gone, undocumented times. Indeed during house building on the Chells Manor area, an important hoard of more than two thousand Roman coins was unearthed, this followed finds of assorted Saxon and Roman artefacts at the time of the building of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons obviously followed the demise of the Romans and their camp was founded near the area where the first actual village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was produced, and almost a century later in twelve eighty one it became a proper town, when it was granted its charter enabling it to hold a weekly market, and additionally, an annual "fair", an occasion that's still organised today.

The St Nicholas Church, Stevenage's parish church was begun during the 12th century, and then substantially upgraded in the 15th century, when a clerestory was added as well as highly elaborate wood work and carvings. The original Grammar School was set up by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th century, and this remained up to the late 20th century. The majority of the town's affluence came from travellers taking the North Road, with plenty of inns becoming built in Stevenage to serve the multitude of stage coaches which passed throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (up to twenty one each day). 1857 celebrated the arrival of the railway and the downfall of stage coaches was at hand, in actual fact leading to a slowing down of growth for the town.
