War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Apart from its nearness to the Roman road, remains and artefacts unearthed in the Stevenage area present proof of its early story in long gone, unrecorded days. In fact during house building on the Chells Manor estate, a very large hoard in excess of two thousand Roman silver coins was discovered, that came after the discovery of many Roman and Saxon relics at the time of the building of the New Town itself. The Saxons obviously followed the decline of the Roman Empire and their camp was built around the spot where the 1st proper village evolved. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was produced, and then in twelve eighty one Stevenage became an true town, when it was accorded its charter which allowed it to hold a weekly market, and also, a once a year "fair", a special event that's still held today.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was begun in the twelfth century, and dramatically upgraded in the 15th C, when a clerestory was added along with some incredibly decorative carvings and woodwork. The first Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in fifteen fifty eight, and this endured up to the later part of the twentieth century. Much of the the wealth of the town resulted from those travelling on the Great North Road, with numerous inns being established in Stevenage to serve all the stage coaches which came by during the 18th and 19th centuries (as much as 21 every day). 1857 heralded the appearance of the railway and the demise of the stage coach was nigh, in actual fact creating a slowing down of growth for the town.
