Then again despite its seemingly new look, the area of Stevenage in reality has an early heritage and lies close to where the Verulanium (St Albans) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, it was named "Stigenace" in the 1086 Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - Apart from its proximity to the Roman road, artefacts discovered in the Stevenage local area deliver proof of its early story in long gone, unrecorded years. Indeed at the time of house building work on the Chells Manor estate, a big hoard of over two thousand silver Roman coins was unearthed, which followed the discovery of a significant number of Roman antiquities during the construction of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons of course came after the collapse of the Romans and their settlement was established around the area where the first actual village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was produced, and then in twelve eighty one it became an real town, when it was awarded its charter which allowed it to hold a weekly market, and also, a once a year "fair", an event that's still held in these modern times.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was started during the 12th century, and dramatically remodelled during the fifteenth century, when a clerestory was added as well as very elaborate carvings and wood work. The first Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th century, and this remained till the late twentieth century. Much of the town's prosperity came from stage coach passengers on the North Road, with numerous coaching inns being established in the town to serve the great many stagecoaches that came by during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as many as twenty one each day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the train and the death of the stage coach was nigh, in fact creating a slow down of expansion for the town.
