Stevenage - Stevenage is a fairly sizeable town situated to the north of the city of London within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, near the major highway the A1 (M), it has a population of around 84,200 and was proclaimed to be the very first of the 'New Towns' in nineteen forty six having half a dozen independent estates, the first of which was finished in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). On the other hand in spite of its outwardly new appearance, the town of Stevenage has an ancient history and stands near to where the Verulanium (Saint Albans) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, it was referred to as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA Brief History of the Town - Besides its proximity to the Roman road, artefacts and relics found in places around Stevenage supply proof of its early historical past in long gone, unrecorded times. In fact at the time of construction on the Chells Manor estate, a vast hoard of more than two thousand Roman silver coins was uncovered, this came after the discovery of a lot of Roman and Saxon antiquities during the construction of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons naturally followed the demise of the Romans and their camp was built around the place where the first proper village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was put together, and later in 1281 it became a town in the true sense of the word, when it was accorded a charter which allowed it to hold a market each week, as well as, a yearly "fair", an event that's still put on in these modern times.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was built during the 12th C, and was extensively enhanced during the 15th century, at which time a clerestory was added and some highly ornamental wood work and carvings. The original Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this remained up to the late 20th century. The majority of the town's riches came from those travelling on the North Road, with numerous coaching inns being established in the town to serve the many stage coaches that came by through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as much as twenty one each day). 1857 celebrated the arrival of the train and the downfall of the stage coach was at hand, actually resulting in a slowing down of progress for the town.
