Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town placed to the north of London in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, beside the A1 (M), it has a population of about 84,200 and was selected to be the first of the 'New Towns' in 1946 consisting of 6 self contained neighbourhoods, the 1st of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Yet despite its seemingly new look, Stevenage does have an early history and grew adjacent to where the St Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, it was named "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageA Short History of the Town - Aside from its closeness to a Roman road, artefacts and relics discovered in locations around Stevenage provide verification of its early historical past in long past, undocumented years. In fact during construction on the Chells Manor area, a very large hoard of over 2,000 Roman silver coins was uncovered, that followed finds of assorted Roman artefacts at the time of the building of the New Town. The Saxons naturally followed the downfall of the Roman Empire and their settlement was set up near the place where the 1st real village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was produced, and later in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a town proper, when it was accorded its charter which allowed it to hold a market each week, as well as, a once a year "fair", a celebration that is still put on to this day.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was commenced in the 12th century, then was significantly improved in the 15th C, when a clerestory was added along with some highly decorative woodwork and carvings. The original Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this existed till the late 20th century. The majority of the town's wealth came from travellers taking the North Road, with many inns becoming built in the town to serve the many stagecoaches that passed through throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as many as twenty one per day). 1857 celebrated the appearance of the train and the downfall of stagecoaches was nigh, actually leading to a slow down of progression for the town.
