Stevenage - Stevenage is a medium sized town located to the north of the city of London within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, just off the major road the A1 (M), it is home to a population of about 84,000 and was proclaimed as the first of the 'New Towns' in 1946 comprising six self contained communities, the first of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). But notwithstanding its seemingly new look, Stevenage has an early heritage and was built near to where the Saint Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, it was listed as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA Brief History of the Town - As well as its nearness to a Roman road, remains and artefacts found in the Stevenage local area present proof of its earlier story in long gone, undocumented times. Indeed at the time of house building on the Chells Manor estate, a large hoard of more than 2,000 Roman silver coins was uncovered, that came after finds of several Roman and Saxon artefacts at the time of the construction of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons obviously followed the end of the Romans and their camp was set up around the area where the first genuine village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was compiled, and then in 1281 Stevenage became a proper town, when it was awarded its charter permitting it to hold a weekly market, and also in addition to this, an annual "fair", an event that's still organised even now.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was commenced in the 12th C, then was considerably enhanced during the 15th century, when a clerestory was added together with some incredibly ornamental woodwork and carvings. The original Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th century, and this was around up to the late 20th C. Almost all the town's affluence resulted from stage coach passengers on the Great North Road, with numerous coaching inns becoming built in the town to serve the many stagecoaches which travelled through during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (up to twenty one every day). 1857 celebrated the coming of the train and the demise of stage coaches was nigh, in reality creating a slow down of growth for the town.
