Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town established north of the capital and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, close to the A1 (M), it has a population of roughly 84,200 and was proclaimed as the very first of the 'New Towns' in the mid-nineteen forties having half a dozen self contained neighbourhoods, the earliest of which was finished in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Having said that irrespective of its ostensibly new appearance, Stevenage in actuality has an ancient history and grew near to where the Verulanium (Saint Albans) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, it was labeled "Stigenace" in the 1086 Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Besides its nearness to a Roman road, artefacts and relics discovered in the Stevenage region deliver evidence of its earlier story in long gone, unrecorded times. Indeed during house building work on the Chells Manor area, a vast hoard of over two thousand silver Roman coins was dug up, which came after finds of a lot of Roman artefacts at the time of the building of the New Town. The Saxons obviously followed the fall of the Roman Empire and their community was founded around the area where the 1st true village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was compiled, and then in twelve eighty one it became an actual town, when it was granted a charter to hold a market every week, as well as, a yearly "fair", an occasion that's still put on in modern times.

The St Nicholas Church, Stevenage's parish church was started during the twelfth century, and considerably upgraded in the 15th C, when a clerestory was added together with some incredibly decorative woodwork and carvings. The 1st Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-sixteenth century, and this existed up to the late 20th C. Almost all the town's riches came from those travelling on the North Road, with many inns being built in Stevenage to provide for the multitude of stage coaches that passed throughout the 18th and 19th centuries (up to 21 per day). 1857 celebrated the coming of the railway and the downfall of the stage coach was at hand, in reality causing a slowing down of growth for the town.
