Stevenage - Stevenage is a large town located to the north of the city of London in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, beside the major route the A1 (M), it houses a population of around 80,000 and was proclaimed as the very first of the 'New Towns' in the 1940's having six independent neighbourhoods, the 1st of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Still notwithstanding its seemingly new look, the area of Stevenage in reality has an early heritage and grew close to where the Baldock to Verulanium (St Albans) Roman road ran, it was noted as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - In addition to its closeness to the Roman road, remains and artefacts discovered in the Stevenage region offer evidence of its early historical past in long past, undocumented years. In fact during house building on the Chells Manor estate, an important hoard of over two thousand Roman coins was found, which came after the discovery of several Roman artefacts during the construction of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons of course came after the downfall of the Roman Empire and their camp was set up near the area where the first actual village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was written, and later in twelve eighty one it became a proper town, when it was accorded a charter permitting it to hold a weekly market, and also, a yearly "fair", a celebration that's still held even now.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was started in the 12th century, then was considerably upgraded in the 15th century, at which time a clerestory was added along with some extremely beautiful carvings and woodwork. The 1st Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in fifteen fifty eight, and this was around up until the late 20th C. The majority of the the affluence of the town resulted from stage coach passengers on the North Road, with plenty of coaching inns becoming built in the town to provide for the multitude of stagecoaches which passed throughout the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as 21 each day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the train and the demise of stage coaches was nigh, in reality leading to a slowing down of expansion for the town.
