Even so despite its obviously new appearance, the town does have an ancient heritage and was built close to where the Baldock to Verulanium (St Albans) Roman road ran, Stevenage was described as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA Concise History of the Town - Apart from its close proximity to a Roman road, relics uncovered in districts around Stevenage offer evidence of its early story in long gone, undocumented times. In fact in the course of construction work on the Chells Manor estate, a gigantic hoard in excess of 2,000 silver Roman coins was uncovered, which came after finds of assorted Saxon and Roman antiquities during the building of the New Town. The Saxons needless to say followed the downfall of the Roman Empire and their camp was set up near the spot where the 1st genuine village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was put together, and then in twelve eighty one it became an genuine town, when it was awarded its charter enabling it to hold a weekly market, as well as, a yearly "fair", a special event which is still held in modern times.

The St Nicholas Church, Stevenage's parish church was started during the 12th C, and then extensively remodelled in the 15th century, at which time a clerestory was added together with some remarkably elaborate wood work and carvings. The earliest Grammar School was set up by Thomas Alleyne in fifteen fifty eight, and this remained up to the later part of the 20th C. Most of the the riches of the town resulted from those travelling on the North Road, with numerous inns becoming established in Stevenage to provide for the multitude of stage coaches that passed by throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as much as 21 each day). 1857 celebrated the coming of the railway and the demise of stagecoaches was at hand, actually resulting in a slow down of progress for the town.
