Stevenage - Stevenage is a good sized town placed to the north of London within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, beside the A1 (M), it has a populace of roughly 84,000 and was designated to be the 1st of the 'New Towns' in the nineteen forties consisting of 6 self contained neighbourhoods, the 1st of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Still regardless of its outwardly new look, the town of Stevenage in fact has an early heritage and was built adjacent to where the Baldock to Verulanium (Saint Albans) road, built by the Romans ran, it was labelled as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Apart from its closeness to the Roman road, artefacts and relics uncovered in the Stevenage local area offer verification of its early history in long gone, undocumented days. In fact in the course of house building work on the Chells Manor estate, a large hoard of over 2,000 Roman silver coins was found, which followed discoveries of many Roman artefacts during the building of the New Town itself. The Anglo-Saxons needless to say came after the fall of the Roman Empire and their settlement was founded around the spot where the 1st real village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was put together, and almost a century later in 1281 it became a town proper, when it was issued its charter to hold a market each week, and also, a once a year "fair", a celebration that's still held to this day.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was first built during the 12th century, and to some extent improved in the 15th century, at which time a clerestory was added along with very decorative woodwork and carvings. The first Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th century, and this was around up until the late twentieth century. Much of the the affluence of the town came from stage coach passengers on the North Road, with plenty of coaching inns becoming established in the town to provide for all the stagecoaches which passed through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as much as twenty one per day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the railway and the end of stagecoaches was nigh, in actual fact creating a slow down of progression for the town.
