Stevenage - Stevenage is a good sized town located to the north of the capital in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, near the A1 (M), it is home to a populace of approximately 85,000 and was selected as the very first of the 'New Towns' in the mid-nineteen forties with six self contained communities, the 1st of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Even so in spite of its apparently new look, the town of Stevenage has an ancient history and developed near to where the Baldock to Verulanium (Saint Albans) Roman road ran, Stevenage was labelled as "Stigenace" in the 11th century Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - In addition to its proximity to a Roman road, artefacts found in the Stevenage local area deliver evidence of its early story in long gone, undocumented times. In fact at the time of house building work on the Chells Manor estate, an immense hoard of over 2,000 silver Roman coins was exposed, that came after finds of varied Roman artefacts at the time of the building of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons obviously followed the fall of the Roman occupation and their community was built near the place where the 1st bona fide village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was compiled, and a century or so later in 1281 it became a town in the real sense of the word, when it was awarded a charter to hold a market every week, and additionally, a yearly "fair", an event which is still held today.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was begun in the twelfth century, then was somewhat improved in the 15th century, at which time a clerestory was added and some highly elaborate carvings and woodwork. The first Grammar School was set up by Thomas Alleyne in 1558, and this existed until the later part of the 20th century. The majority of the town's riches came from those travelling on the North Road, with plenty of coaching inns being built in the town to serve all the stagecoaches that passed through through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (up to 21 each day). 1857 celebrated the coming of the train and the decline of stage coaches was at hand, in fact causing a slow down of expansion for the town.
