War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - Besides its close proximity to the Roman road, artefacts discovered in the Stevenage region offer proof of its earlier story in long past, unrecorded times. Indeed during building on the Chells Manor area, a very large hoard in excess of 2,000 Roman coins was uncovered, which came after the discovery of assorted Saxon and Roman artifacts during the building of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons obviously followed the decline of the Romans and their settlement was set up around the spot where the first true village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was put together, and some time later in 1281 it became a proper town, when it was issued its charter enabling it to hold a market each week, and also, a once a year "fair", a special event that's still held today.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was commenced during the 12th century, and was to some extent enhanced in the 15th century, at which time a clerestory was added as well as incredibly elaborate carvings and wood work. The 1st Grammar School was set up by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this remained in existence up to the later part of the 20th C. Almost all the town's affluence came from travellers taking the Great North Road, for lots of coaching inns being built in Stevenage to provide for the great many stage coaches which passed through throughout the 18th and 19th centuries (as much as 21 per day). 1857 celebrated the coming of the railway and the dying of stagecoaches was at hand, in fact resulting in a slow down of growth for the town.
