Stevenage - Stevenage is a medium sized town to be found north of the capital and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, adjacent to the major route the A1 (M), it has a population of around 84,000 and was proclaimed as the first of the 'New Towns' in the mid-nineteen forties with 6 self contained communities, the earliest of which was completed in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Having said that notwithstanding its outwardly new appearance, Stevenage does have an early history and evolved near to where the Verulanium (Saint Albans) to Baldock Roman road ran, it was known as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA Short History of the Town - Apart from its proximity to a Roman road, antiquities uncovered in places around Stevenage provide proof of its early historical past in long past, unrecorded days. In fact in the course of house building work on the Chells Manor area, a huge hoard of over 2,000 silver Roman coins was discovered, that came after the discovery of varied Roman relics at the time of the construction of the New Town itself. The Saxons needless to say followed the fall of the Roman occupation and their community was established near the area where the first actual village evolved. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was compiled, and later in twelve eighty one it became a proper town, when it was awarded its charter allowing it to hold a weekly market, and additionally, a yearly "fair", a special event that is still held to this day.

The St Nicholas Church, Stevenage's parish church was begun during the 12th century, and then somewhat improved during the fifteenth century, at which time a clerestory was added along with some highly decorative carvings and woodwork. The first Grammar School was set up by Thomas Alleyne in fifteen fifty eight, and this remained up to the late 20th C. Much of the town's riches came from those travelling on the North Road, with lots of coaching inns being established in the town to provide for the great many stagecoaches which passed through throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (up to twenty one every day). 1857 heralded the coming of the train and the demise of the stage coach was at hand, actually creating a slow down of growth for the town.
