Stevenage - Stevenage is a rather substantial town to be found to the north of London and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, close to the A1 (M), it has a population of around 84,000 and was proclaimed to be the first of the 'New Towns' in the 1940's consisting of 6 self contained estates, the first of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Still notwithstanding its obviously new look, the town in truth has an ancient heritage and lies adjacent to where the Baldock to Saint Albans (Verulanium) Roman road ran, it was listed as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - Apart from its nearness to the Roman road, antiquities unearthed in the Stevenage region provide proof of its earlier story in long past, unrecorded times. Indeed during building on the Chells Manor estate, an extensive hoard in excess of two thousand Roman coins was found, this came after the discovery of many Saxon and Roman artefacts at the time of the building of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons of course came after the fall of the Roman Empire and their settlement was set up close to the spot where the first true village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was written, and a century or so later in twelve eighty one it became an genuine town, when it was awarded its charter to hold a weekly market, and also, a yearly "fair", a special event which is still put on in these modern times.

The St Nicholas Church, Stevenage's parish church was begun during the twelfth century, and dramatically upgraded during the fifteenth century, at which time a clerestory was added together with very ornamental woodwork and carvings. The 1st Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-sixteenth century, and this was around up to the later part of the 20th century. The majority of the the affluence of the town came from those travelling on the Great North Road, with lots of coaching inns becoming established in Stevenage to serve the multitude of stage coaches which passed through during the 18th and 19th centuries (up to 21 every day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the train and the demise of stage coaches was at hand, in reality causing a slow down of progress for the town.
