Stevenage - Stevenage is a large town located to the north of the city of London and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, near the A1(M) motorway, it houses a population of roughly 85,000 and was designated as the very first of the 'New Towns' in the mid-nineteen forties with 6 independent communities, the first of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Yet regardless of its ostensibly new appearance, the area of Stevenage in fact has an early history and stands close to where the Saint Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, it was labelled "Stigenace" in the 1086 Domesday Book.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Besides its nearness to a Roman road, artefacts discovered in locations around Stevenage present evidence of its earlier history in long gone, undocumented days. Indeed in the course of house building work on the Chells Manor area, a gigantic hoard of over two thousand Roman coins was found, this came after the discovery of several Roman and Saxon artifacts during the construction of the New Town itself. The Saxons obviously came after the decline of the Romans and their camp was founded close to the area where the 1st proper village evolved. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was produced, and later in twelve eighty one Stevenage became an actual town, when it was granted its charter to hold a market each week, as well as, a once a year "fair", a special event that's still put on even today.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was begun during the 12th C, and to some degree upgraded during the fifteenth century, when a clerestory was added along with extremely ornamental wood work and carvings. The first Grammar School was set up by Thomas Alleyne in fifteen fifty eight, and this existed until the late 20th C. Much of the town's affluence resulted from those travelling on the North Road, with many coaching inns becoming built in Stevenage to provide for the many stage coaches that passed through the 18th and 19th centuries (up to 21 per day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the train and the decline of the stage coach was nigh, actually resulting in a slowing down of progress for the town.
