The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was produced, and later on in twelve eighty one it became a proper town, when it was granted its charter to hold a weekly market, and additionally, an annual "fair", a celebration which is still organised even today.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was begun during the 12th C, then was to some extent upgraded during the 15th C, when a clerestory was added along with extremely decorative carvings and woodwork. The first Grammar School was established by Thomas Alleyne in 1558, and this persisted up to the later part of the 20th century. Much of the the riches of the town came from stage coach passengers on the Great North Road, with numerous coaching inns being established in the town to provide for the many stage coaches that travelled through throughout the 18th and 19th centuries (as many as twenty one every day). 1857 heralded the arrival of the railway and the demise of stagecoaches was nigh, in reality causing a slow down of growth for the town.
