Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town placed to the north of London in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, beside the major route the A1 (M), it boasts a population of roughly 85,000 and was designated to be the first of the 'New Towns' in 1946 with half a dozen independent estates, the 1st of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Still irrespective of its ostensibly new appearance, the town of Stevenage does have an early history and lies adjacent to where the Verulanium (Saint Albans) to Baldock Roman road ran, it was termed "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Aside from its nearness to a Roman road, remains unearthed in areas around Stevenage offer verification of its early story in long gone, unrecorded times. In fact during construction work on the Chells Manor area, a gigantic hoard in excess of 2,000 Roman silver coins was dug up, this came after finds of a lot of Saxon and Roman relics during the building of the New Town. The Saxons needless to say came after the demise of the Roman Empire and their community was set up around the place where the first actual village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was put together, and almost a century later in 1281 Stevenage became a town in the true sense of the word, when it was granted a charter permitting it to hold a weekly market, and also in addition to this, a once a year "fair", an occasion which is still held in modern times.

The St Nicholas Church, Stevenage's parish church was begun during the twelfth century, and somewhat remodelled during the fifteenth century, at which time a clerestory was added along with some very beautiful woodwork and carvings. The original Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this persisted up to the late 20th C. Almost all the the wealth of the town came from stage coach passengers on the North Road, with many coaching inns being established in Stevenage to provide for the many stagecoaches which came by through the 18th and 19th centuries (as much as twenty one each day). 1857 celebrated the appearance of the railway and the downfall of the stage coach was nigh, in fact creating a slow down of progression for the town.
