Stevenage - Stevenage is a large town positioned to the north of the city of London within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, near the A1(M) motorway, it boasts a population of roughly 84,000 and was selected to be the first of the 'New Towns' in 1946 comprising half a dozen independent estates, the 1st of which was completed in 1951 (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). On the other hand irrespective of its seemingly new appearance, the town in reality has an ancient heritage and grew close to where the St Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock Roman road ran, Stevenage was termed "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - Besides its proximity to the Roman road, remains and artefacts found in the Stevenage local area present proof of its early story in long past, undocumented days. Indeed in the course of construction on the Chells Manor estate, an important hoard of over 2,000 silver Roman coins was uncovered, that came after the discovery of countless Roman artefacts at the time of the building of the New Town. The Saxons obviously followed the end of the Roman occupation and their camp was established around the place where the first proper village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was produced, and later on in twelve eighty one Stevenage became an actual town, when it was issued its charter to hold a market every week, as well as, a yearly "fair", a special event that is still put on today.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was begun in the 12th century, and was to some extent upgraded in the fifteenth century, when a clerestory was added as well as highly beautiful carvings and wood work. The very first Grammar School was founded by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-sixteenth century, and this remained until the late 20th C. A lot of the town's riches resulted from travellers taking the North Road, with many coaching inns being established in the town to provide for all the stage coaches which passed by during the 18th and 19th centuries (up to 21 per day). 1857 celebrated the coming of the train and the downfall of stagecoaches was nigh, in actual fact leading to a slow down of progress for the town.
