Stevenage - Stevenage is a medium sized town based to the north of London and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, beside the major road the A1 (M), it houses a population of approximately 85,000 and was selected as the first of the 'New Towns' in the mid-1940's consisting of 6 self contained neighbourhoods, the first of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Still regardless of its ostensibly new appearance, the area of Stevenage does have an early the historical past and lies near to where the Verulanium (St Albans) to Baldock Roman road ran, it was recorded as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA Potted History of the Town - Aside from its close proximity to the Roman road, antiquities unearthed in the Stevenage region deliver verification of its earlier story in long gone, unrecorded times. Indeed in the course of construction on the Chells Manor area, a big hoard in excess of 2,000 Roman silver coins was uncovered, this came after the discovery of various Roman relics at the time of the building of the New Town itself. The Saxons needless to say came after the collapse of the Roman occupation and their community was established around the place where the first real village evolved. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", by the time the Domesday Book was put together, and later in 1281 it became a town proper, when it was accorded a charter permitting it to hold a market each week, and in addition to this, an annual "fair", a celebration which is still put on today.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was begun in the 12th C, and was significantly remodelled during the 15th century, when a clerestory was added and some remarkably ornamental wood work and carvings. The original Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in fifteen fifty eight, and this existed until the late 20th century. Most of the town's affluence resulted from travellers taking the Great North Road, with many coaching inns becoming established in the town to serve all the stagecoaches that passed through during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as many as twenty one each day). 1857 heralded the coming of the railway and the dying of stagecoaches was nigh, in fact resulting in a slow down of expansion for the town.
