Stevenage - Stevenage is a good sized town situated to the north of London and within the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, adjacent to the major highway the A1 (M), it has a population of around 84,200 and was proclaimed as the first of the 'New Towns' in the 1940's consisting of six self contained communities, the earliest of which was completed in 1951 (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). Then again despite its apparently new appearance, Stevenage in fact has an early heritage and was built close to where the Verulanium (Saint Albans) to Baldock Roman road ran, Stevenage was labeled "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - As well as its close proximity to a Roman road, relics found in the Stevenage local area supply evidence of its earlier historical past in long past, undocumented times. In fact during construction on the Chells Manor estate, a gigantic hoard of more than 2,000 Roman silver coins was discovered, this came after discoveries of numerous Roman and Saxon relics at the time of the building of the New Town. The Saxons obviously came after the decline of the Romans and their community was set up around the spot where the 1st actual village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was compiled, and later in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a town in the correct sense of the word, when it was accorded a charter allowing it to hold a market each week, and also, a yearly "fair", a celebration that is still held even today.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was started during the twelfth century, and greatly remodelled during the fifteenth century, when a clerestory was added as well as some extremely elaborate woodwork and carvings. The earliest Grammar School was started by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this existed up to the late 20th century. The vast majority of town's riches resulted from those travelling on the Great North Road, with lots of inns being established in the town to serve the large number of stagecoaches that passed through during the 18th and 19th centuries (up to twenty one per day). 1857 heralded the appearance of the train and the demise of the stage coach was nigh, in actual fact causing a slowing down of expansion for the town.
