Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town positioned to the north of London and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) part of the Home Counties region, close to the A1(M) motorway, it is home to a population of about 80,000 and was selected as the 1st of the 'New Towns' in the nineteen forties with 6 independent estates, the 1st of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Stoney Hall and Monks Wood). On the other hand despite its obviously new look, the town in reality has an early heritage and lies close to where the St Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock road, built by the Romans ran, Stevenage was labelled "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA Brief History of the Town - Apart from its nearness to the Roman road, remains and artefacts discovered in the Stevenage locale offer verification of its early historical past in long gone, undocumented days. In fact at the time of construction on the Chells Manor area, a very large hoard of over two thousand silver Roman coins was uncovered, this followed the discovery of a lot of Roman relics during the building of the New Town itself. The Saxons naturally came after the decline of the Roman occupation and their camp was established around the area where the first bona fide village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", at the time the Domesday Book was produced, and then in 1281 it became an actual town, when it was issued its charter to hold a weekly market, and also in addition to this, an annual "fair", an event that's still organised even now.

The Church of St Nicholas, the parish church of Stevenage was built during the 12th century, and then considerably upgraded in the 15th C, at which time a clerestory was added as well as some highly decorative carvings and woodwork. The very first Grammar School was launched by Thomas Alleyne in fifteen fifty eight, and this persisted up to the late twentieth century. The majority of the town's wealth came from travellers taking the North Road, with numerous coaching inns being built in the town to serve the many stage coaches that passed through through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as many as 21 each day). 1857 celebrated the appearance of the railway and the end of the stage coach was nigh, in fact causing a slowing down of progression for the town.
