Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town positioned north of the capital and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, beside the A1 (M), it houses a population of about 84,200 and was proclaimed to be the first of the 'New Towns' in the 1940's consisting of six self contained neighbourhoods, the first of which was completed in 1951 (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Still notwithstanding its ostensibly new appearance, Stevenage does have an ancient history and stands near to where the Saint Albans (Verulanium) to Baldock Roman road ran, it was labelled as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - As well as its proximity to a Roman road, remains discovered in locations around Stevenage provide proof of its early story in long past, undocumented days. Indeed at the time of construction on the Chells Manor area, an extensive hoard of more than two thousand Roman silver coins was unearthed, that came after finds of various Roman artifacts at the time of the building of the New Town itself. The Saxons needless to say came after the downfall of the Romans and their community was established around the area where the first genuine village grew. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was put together, and then in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a town proper, when it was granted its charter to hold a weekly market, and also, a once a year "fair", an occasion which is still put on in these modern times.

The St Nicholas Church, the parish church of Stevenage was begun in the 12th century, then was to some degree enhanced during the 15th C, at which time a clerestory was added together with very elaborate carvings and woodwork. The 1st Grammar School was founded by Thomas Alleyne in 1558, and this endured till the later part of the 20th C. The majority of the the affluence of the town resulted from travellers taking the Great North Road, with plenty of coaching inns becoming built in the town to provide for the multitude of stage coaches which came by during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as many as 21 each day). 1857 celebrated the arrival of the railway and the dying of stagecoaches was at hand, in actual fact leading to a slow down of progress for the town.
