Stevenage - Stevenage is a largish town found to the north of the city of London and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, beside the major highway the A1 (M), it boasts a population of about 84,200 and was designated to be the first of the 'New Towns' in nineteen forty six consisting of half a dozen self contained estates, the 1st of which was finished in 1951 (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Then again despite its fairly new appearance, the town has an early the historical past and was built adjacent to where the Baldock to Saint Albans (Verulanium) Roman road ran, Stevenage was identified as "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book (1086).

War memorial, StevenageA History of Stevenage - In addition to its closeness to a Roman road, artefacts unearthed in the Stevenage local area supply evidence of its early history in long past, unrecorded days. Indeed during building on the Chells Manor area, a considerable hoard of over two thousand Roman coins was discovered, this followed discoveries of many Saxon and Roman relics at the time of the construction of the New Town itself. The Saxons of course came after the demise of the Roman Empire and their settlement was established around the place where the 1st genuine village emerged. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was the Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", as the Domesday Book was produced, and then in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a town proper, when it was issued its charter which allowed it to hold a market every week, and also in addition to this, an annual "fair", an event which is still organised today.

The St Nicholas Church, Stevenage's parish church was commenced in the 12th century, and was greatly remodelled in the 15th C, when a clerestory was added along with some extremely beautiful wood work and carvings. The earliest Grammar School was founded by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this persisted till the later part of the 20th C. Much of the the prosperity of the town resulted from those travelling on the North Road, with lots of inns being established in the town to provide for the great many stagecoaches which passed by during the 18th and 19th centuries (up to twenty one each day). 1857 celebrated the arrival of the train and the dying of stage coaches was at hand, in fact resulting in a slowing down of progress for the town.
