Stevenage - Stevenage is a good sized town placed north of the capital and in the county of Hertfordshire (Herts) within the Home Counties region, beside the major route the A1 (M), it is home to a population of about 85,000 and was chosen as the 1st of the 'New Towns' in the mid-1940's consisting of half a dozen self contained estates, the earliest of which was finished in nineteen fifty one (Monks Wood and Stoney Hall). Still regardless of its fairly new appearance, the town does have an ancient the historical past and developed near to where the Baldock to St Albans (Verulanium) road, built by the Romans ran, Stevenage was named "Stigenace" in the Domesday Book of 1086.

War memorial, StevenageStevenage History - Aside from its close proximity to the Roman road, remains uncovered in the Stevenage locale deliver evidence of its earlier history in long past, undocumented days. Indeed in the course of building on the Chells Manor estate, an immense hoard of over two thousand Roman coins was uncovered, this followed the discovery of a considerable number of Roman antiquities at the time of the building of the New Town. The Anglo-Saxons naturally came after the fall of the Roman occupation and their community was set up near the place where the 1st real village developed. The Abbott of Westminster Abbey was Lord of the Manor of "Stigenace", when the Domesday Book was produced, and a century or so later in twelve eighty one Stevenage became a town in the correct sense of the word, when it was awarded its charter to hold a weekly market, and also in addition to this, a yearly "fair", a special event which is still held in modern times.

The Church of St Nicholas, Stevenage's parish church was commenced during the 12th C, and was substantially enhanced during the 15th C, when a clerestory was added together with very beautiful carvings and wood work. The original Grammar School was set up by Thomas Alleyne in the mid-16th C, and this endured until the later part of the 20th century. The majority of the the prosperity of the town resulted from those travelling on the Great North Road, with plenty of coaching inns becoming established in Stevenage to provide for all the stagecoaches which passed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (up to twenty one every day). 1857 celebrated the appearance of the train and the downfall of the stage coach was at hand, in fact leading to a slowing down of expansion for the town.
